Riding the Waves

There is a point in the ocean
Between the waves which break
Close to the shore
And the ones which break
Far away.

A place where the waves are just
Swells and valleys
About waist deep most of the time.

It’s calm there,
Serene.
And if you trust the ocean,
You’ll let it pull you close to shore at times,
And then, as a large wave approaches,
You’ll fight back the fear,
And be drawn toward it,
Riding over it with a gentle jump
Before it breaks.

I wonder if God’s will is like this.
It’s the calm place
Between the turbulence
Outside his will.

When the big challenges arise
Which he wants us to meet
If we will fight down the fear
And allow ourselves to be drawn close
To that which scares us,
To that for which we think we are not equipped
Or gifted
Or ready to ride
We will find ourselves
Peacefully, with a gentle jump
Lifted up high on his spirit
And riding the wave.
